HOW Design Conference Attendees Select Winners in Three Categories for Ninth Annual Design Competition
(Chesapeake, VA) — YUPO Corporation America, a leading global manufacturer of synthetic paper and presenter of the Wally Awards, has announced the winners of the ninth annual design competition.
- Best Design entry – Set Sail Challenge by Tom Moe of Daily Printing – Plymouth, MN
- Best Package entry – Home Depot Plant Marker Gift Card Carrier by Jeff Sproat of Jet Printing – Downers Grove, IL
- Best Artist entry – Nirmal Singh of Florida – “Family Cruising“
“Set Sail Challenge” by Tom Moe with Daily Printing was selected for the Best Design category and will receive a cash award. Home Depot Plant Marker Gift Card Carrier by Jeff Sproat with Jet Printing will receive a cash award for winning the Best Package category. Nirmal Singh of Florida will receive an ample supply of yupo paper for his Best Artist category winning entry, “Family Cruising.”
For the third year in a row, several projects were on display at the HOW Design Conference in Boston. There, attendees were given the opportunity to select the Wally Award recipient.
“From the numerous submissions we received again this year, it’s evident that designers truly understand YUPO’s unique attributes,” said Bill Hewitt, marketing manager for yupo. “The quality of submissions that came in again this year was incredible – voters definitely had their work cut out for them.”

The idea behind this self-promotion was to design a piece that was iconic of a Minnesota summer, where the lifejacket is not only a safety device but also a fashion statement. Using this for the backdrop, many valued aspects of printing on yupo were incorporated – four-color process, die-cut, and embossing and also because yupo is tear resistant and can stand up to the harshest conditions. “My favorite thing about yupo is its durability factor to stand up against rugged use,” Tom Moe said.

YUPO was the answer for Jeff Sproat and Home Depot when they were in search of a substrate that was durable with good printing characteristics as well as be suitable for a wet environment. “YUPO is waterproof, resists stains, tear-resistant and holds ink beautifully,” said Jeff Sproat, Senior Account Executive with Jet Printing. “Since these stakes are going to be placed in a wet environment, there was no question that this was the best substrate for the job.”
Nirmal Singh – “Family Cruising”
Nirmal Singh is an internal medicine physician by profession; however art, specifically watercolor, is his passion. His work recently won the “Award of Distinction” at the First City Show in Pensacola at Quayside Art Gallery, juried by the famous watercolorist Don Andrews. “The colors seem more vibrant in yupo,” said Nirmal Singh. “Its smooth surface allows for watercolor to flow. A certain rhythm is created, a color cadence, and magic.”
