Yupo Corporation America Named Chesapeake’s 2016 Business of the Year

(CHESAPEAKE, VA – June 22, 2016) – The Chesapeake Economic Development Authority recently named Yupo Corporation America its 2016 Business of the Year. Karen Zorumski, VP, Administration and Ed Burtner, VP, Manufacturing accepted the award from Chesapeake Mayor Alan P. Krasnoff on behalf of the company at the 16th annual Chesapeake Business appreciation event held last month at Cahoon Golf Course.

Yupo Corporation America is an industry leader and the largest manufacturer of synthetic paper in the Western Hemisphere.  From its administrative and sales office located adjacent to the manufacturing facility in the Greenbrier section of Chesapeake, Yupo markets throughout North and South America.

Thanks to extensive research and development, Yupo produces seven principal grades and multiple basis weights of synthetic paper for labels and packaging products. The Chesapeake facility manufactures more than 10,000 metric tons of synthetic paper annually.

When Yupo selected Chesapeake for its headquarters in the mid-1990s, the company initially invested $100 million and created 100 jobs – making it one of the biggest investments Chesapeake had seen at the time.

Since beginning operations in 1996, Yupo has invested an additional $20 million and increased its workforce by 50 percent. Yupo continues to find new ways to grow and build its operations in Chesapeake due in part to the city’s available skilled labor force, residential quality of life and geographic and logistic accessibility.
